Based in one of the most challenging and deprived areas of London, the Pedro Club in Hackney has been supporting the community since 1929 when it was founded by Baroness Elliot of Harwood. Former British and European Super-Middleweight Champion, James Cook currently runs the club, and was recently awarded an MBE for his services to youth justice in Hackney.
Pedro Club’s aim is to act as a resource for children and young people by providing advice and organising programmes of physical, educational and other activities as a means of relieving unemployment, advancing education and enabling young people to participate in society as independent and mature individuals.
The club does not have a specific catchment area but it attracts a significant number of members from Clapton Park, Millfield and Nye Devan estates in the E5 area. Whilst the benefits for those who attend the club are clear to see, we also believe the services provided by the Pedro club improves the community atmosphere and spirit for all local residents and visitors.
Centrus has been providing logistical and financial support to Pedro since December 2016. With the aid of legal advisors and management consultants (all volunteering their time free of charge) we are in the process of helping Pedro Club establish more thorough governance procedures and a well-defined management structure. We hope this, paired with short term financial support enables the club to stay open, will help put Pedro Club on a more stable footing. In turn enabling access to longer term funding and grants, allowing the club to remain an essential part of the local community for years to come.
However, our resources are limited and whilst our long-term plans are put in place, the club is in desperate need of further short term funding to help keep the lights on and refurbish the club so that it is fit for purpose. We therefore are asking all our clients and contacts to help however they can. Donations can be made via the JustGiving page:
